COSTUME DESIGN BY WURAOLA ADENIJI
On a rest during the 1962 Antibes
International Jazz Fest, a French film
crew—headed by “New Wave” film
director Pierre Beloit—seeks to
capture the combustive essence of 31
year-old bassist/composer Marion
Bailey.
Left unfinished for over sixty years,
the restored 16MM reel offers a
glimpse into the psyche of a Black
musician at a time not so unfamiliar to
our own in its discardment of its
greatest poets. Herein, Bailey unveils
his new approach to an almost
thankless music—one relegated to the
background of life in the West and at
the mercy of the mainstream.
